The 2020 Trash Item of the Year is the now-iconic sky-blue face mask donned by our heroic healthcare workers, essential employees, and responsible science-believing New Yorkers across the City.

This low-tech piece of healthcare equipment has saved countless lives, hospital visits, and bereaved families.

The face mask was also politicized by an absent and delinquent federal government that sought to defund and undermine New York City and then point to those challenges as failures in our beliefs, collective character, and values. But New York City is still here, and ready for 2021. Bring on Broadway. Bring on arts and culture. Bring on the enduring spirit of New York City.
