Abandoned office chairs on the sidewalks of New York City symbolize how the very idea of work is experiencing a transformation across the City. Entire office buildings remain largely vacant, hollow carcasses of empty rooms, silent elevators, and quiet hallways – all protected by a bored human being at a front desk staring at still monitors and lifeless streets beyond the window.  

COVID-19 has flung many New Yorkers across America and beyond, where they hunker down in suburban houses and woodsy cottages, Zooming into the jobs they once commuted to via the MTA. No more, for now. Gone are the packed L Trains. Gone are the crowded sidewalks. Gone are the stressed out, bustling throngs of professionals rushing to and from work – and past tourists who proclaim their love for New York City’s “energy.”
